Dharmagiri Outreach
Dharmagiri is committed to responding to the needs of the local community through a variety of outreach initiatives, including the very successful Woza Moya Project, a HIV and AIDS community home based care service which is located in the Chibini community near Ixopo. The Woza Moya project is growing rapidly and always finding new ways to respond to the problems faced by the local people, to find out more please visit their website at www.wozamoya.org.za........
The Khuphuka Project
Presently Dharmagiri outreach will be focusing its efforts upon the launch of the new Khuphuka Project in February 2009. Khuphuka literally means ‘rise up’ in Zulu. The Khuphuka Project will be a HIV and AIDS community care and support program initially serving the uMqatsheni tribal area outside Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal. This community faces huge problems including high HIV infection rates, high levels of unemployment, many orphans and ‘at risk’ children and associated poverty (the community reports a large number of families close to starvation). The Khuphuka Project has developed a positive relationship with the tribal leaders at uMqatsheni who support the development of the project and have granted tribal land to construct a community outreach centre from which to deliver the service, work on which is planned for 2009. Work on the ground will begin in February 2009. The project will be directed by Jacqueline Healy who has a background in human rights work, Sister Abigail Ntleko who is a widely respected local nursing sister and Matt York who is also a qualified nurse. The youth worker, community care workers and paralegal workers will all be sourced from the local area. The project aims to create and develop a variety of services including a home based care service, a paralegal service, HIV and AIDS education and awareness programs, counseling services and support groups as well as food security and income generation projects. We are currently raising funds for running costs and also the building of the community centre. The community centre will act as a base for the community care and paralegal services as well as a venue for community meetings, support groups, HIV and AIDS training and education, as well as to provide the potential to create income generating projects, due to the size of the land. We are very grateful to sister sanghas around the world who are showing support to the Khuphuka project including the San Francisco Insight meditation society, and the London Insight meditation society and also all the other groups and meditation centres who are kindly distributing leaflets for us. We are also deeply moved by the kindness of individuals who are supporting our work.
